The Whitworth spanner, nut and bolt system take their name from Joseph Whitworth 1803 to 1887 the brilliant Manchester engineer who devised a system that revolutionised the chaotic system of threads prevailing in the early 19th Century.
Most British made cars, trucks, tractors and engineered products made prior to 1960 require Whitworth spanners.
