Whitworth sizes relate to the diameter (the round part) of the bolt.
For BS (British Standard) and BSF (British Standard Fine) bolt sizes use next lower size in Old Whitworth. For example: 7/16" Old Whitworth spanner fits 1/2" diameter BSF Bolts and nuts.
